Chapter Eighteen

Natasha

I was starting to get organized and dig into work when Jay walked into my office. He looked pale and shaky. His normally bright eyes were unusually glassy.

Once he was situated on the couch, I buried myself in work, stopping every once in a while to check on him. His breathing was smooth, and the color returned to his complexion.

I stood over him and ached to caress his face. It was hard not to comfort him when every ounce of my body told me that is what I should be doing. I settled for allowing my eyes to rove over every inch of him and memorize the strong masculine features of his face. What would it be like to wake up next to that face every day?

I hung my head, because something told me that I would never find out. I returned to my office to get back to work. An hour later, my cell phone rang and as I picked it up, I wondered what Jerry had bitched about this time.

“Hey, bro, what are you calling to yell about now?”

He laughed. “Actually, nothing. I called to see how you were doing.”

“So you were checking up on me to make sure my John Doe didn’t kill me, is that it?”

“You know me too well. Yes, that’s why I’m calling.”

I leaned back in my chair. “Please tell me that Jerry didn’t call you crying again this morning.”

“No, why? Did you guys get into another fight?”

I shook my head even though he couldn’t see it. “No, I told him it was over.”

He paused for a moment. “Is this because of the guy staying with you?”

I put my hand over my eyes and rubbed my temples with my left hand. “No, this is about me, not Jay.”

“You sure about that?”

“Yes, I’m sure about it,” I stated firmly, although in my heart, I knew the feelings I had for Jay gave me the strength to end the relationship with Jerry.

“What are you doing tonight?” Nick changed the subject, thankfully.

“Nothing, staying home, cooking dinner, and chilling out.”

“What’s for dinner?” he asked.

“Why, do you want to come over?”

“Thanks for the invite, I think I will.” I chuckled because I knew he had an ulterior motive. He wanted to meet Jay, and I didn’t think it was such a bad idea to have someone here as a buffer for us. We’d be more likely to keep our hands off each other if someone was around.

I was just about to tell him what time to arrive when Jay wandered back into my office, looking much better than he had this morning.

We had a nice lunch and I was nervous about telling him Nick was coming. Part of me really wanted them to meet, but my practical business side said that introducing him to more of my personal life was only asking for trouble. Jay seemed all right with the idea and dinner was planned.

I still had work to do and after lunch I found myself elbow deep
